Treatment Visits

How do we manage your child for specialist dental treatment?

Managing dental treatment for children is very different from that of adult dentistry.

Children are not miniature adults. They differ physically, emotionally and physiologically.  Their treatment needs to be tailored to cater for these differences.  Current research shows that by reducing the patient’s anxiety their pain threshold is increased.  Given this, dental care must be adapted for each individual child.

There are on average 12 factors which are taken into consideration when deciding on a treatment management option for your child.  Some of these factors include:

  1. Age
  2. Previous behaviour with dental care
  3. Child’s temperament and personality which reflects anxiety levels
  4. Current cooperation levels such as - Can they sit still for a certain length of time?
  5. How wide can they open their mouth?
  6. Is moisture control difficult (keeping a tooth dry from saliva to allow a white filling to adhere)?
  7. Can they tolerate having  local anaesthetic, rubber dam and handpieces in their mouth?
  8. Do they have a sensitive gag reflex?
  9. Are they sensitive to different tastes and sounds?
  10. How many teeth need treatment?
  11. What type of treatment is needed?
  12. Which option allows for the highest standard of dentistry?

Comprehensive treatment of multiple teeth may require 3-4 appointments or 1 appointment under general anaesthetic.
